Hurricane Assembly

The Hurricane Assembly by Dr. Hays’ Physics Class
by Jenny An and Paul Ko

On October 6th, 2010, the Fairfax Christian School had our first school-wide assembly of the year. Dr. Hays’ Physics class presented information on the tropical storms and hurricanes that have occurred during 2010. The assembly consisted of 15 tropical storms and hurricanes: Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Herminie, Igor, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Matthew, Nicole and Otto.

Students from the Physics class made colorful posters highlighting each hurricane that occurred in 2010 in alphabetical order, and presented them in front of the entire school.

During the assembly, students learned how hurricanes are formed, what periods of the year hurricanes occur, and how hurricanes are destroyed.
Middle and elementary school students helped the high school students compare the hurricanes that occurred in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Fairfax Christian School held their Science Fair 2010 on May 26th. There were entries from the lower school, middle school and high school. Here are a few highlights from the Science Fair.

Dr. Walter Hays In Switzerland

Dr. Walter Hays, who teaches Earth Science and Physics, was invited by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to represent them as an expert in a session at the 3rd International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction to be convened in Davos, Switzerland on May 30 - June 4.

The session focuses on  mega-catastrophes and large-scale natural hazards, such as: the Indian Ocean Tsunami; Hurricane Katrina; the Wenchuan, China, Port au Prince, Haiti, and Chile earthquakes; the Iceland volcano eruption;  and the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.  These occurrences have revealed gaps in disaster preparedness, disaster response, and disaster recovery that have led to catastrophes for the communities at risk. The panel will elaborate on best practices in science, engineering, and education to build capacity and  foster implementation of policies for global risk reduction.

Dr. Hays regularly uses his expertise and incorporates these current events into the science curriculum through classroom exercises, project and assemblies.
